Why I Finally Started a YouTube Channel

I really had no great desire to start a YouTube channel. I didn’t want to start back at zero after having worked for the past several years to build my Instagram and TikTok to more than 170,000 followers combined.

But…

A Reading Challenge Changed Everything

For my 40th birthday, I challenged myself to read 40 of the most influential books ever written.

One of those books was Atomic Habits.

It was… fine.

I enjoyed it. But I certainly didn’t think it was the greatest book ever written like some people seem to. That said, one idea did really strike me. It’s this:

Decide what kind of person you want to become and then build habits that draw you toward that identity.

That got me thinking.

What kind of person do I want to be?

Well, I want to be someone who really knows the Bible.

So I started using my morning commute to memorize Scripture from the Gospel of John. Before long I found myself thinking about those passages throughout the day. In the shower. Mowing the lawn. Driving home from work. Then I started using those verses in conversations with coworkers, friends, and family. I began to love this new daily spiritual discipline.

God’s Word really is active and alive, sharper than any double-edged sword.

Two months later, I can walk through all 21 chapters of John’s Gospel, explain what happens in each chapter, and recite a key passage from every one. The entire presentation takes about 28 minutes.

I wanted to share it.

Instagram and TikTok simply aren’t built for that kind of content.

So… here I am.

What You’ll Find on The Channel

If you’ve followed me on social media, you already know my passion is helping Christians think biblically in today’s culture.

That takes a few different forms.

Sometimes I’ll respond to current events from a Christian worldview.

Sometimes we’ll dive into apologetics and answer tough questions about the Christian faith.

Other times we’ll talk about books that strengthen your faith, challenge your thinking, or simply deserve more attention.

If you’re a Christian who wants to better understand what you believe and why you believe it, you’re in the right place.

Quick Reminder

My books are a writing ministry, not how I make my living. All of the profit from the publishing company I formed, Living Sacrifice Books, is donated to my local church each year as a special offering.

What began as a quarantine project for my local church eventually grew into multiple books that have now reached readers around the world, with tens of thousands of copies sold, millions of Kindle Unlimited pages read, and audiobooks now available as well.

None of that is something I take credit for.

All of the glory goes to the only true living God!

What I’m Most Excited About For The Channel

Owning my own publishing company gives me freedom that many other authors don’t have.

I’m not waiting for a publisher’s permission to create the kind of content I think will serve Christians.

One example is already in the works.

As soon as my channel reaches 1,000 subscribers, I’m releasing the complete audiobook of my first book, You Don’t Need a Ph.D. to Find G-O-D, on YouTube completely free.

In fact, I’ve already started recording it.

I’m not interested in getting the approval of publishing committees or chasing whatever happens to be popular.

At the end of the day, there’s really only one approval that matters. The audience of One.

What I’m Reading

The Bible comes first.

Every single day.

Before I pick up another book, I finish my Bible-in-a-year reading.

Everything else comes after that.

Outside of Scripture, I read quite a bit. Kindle has been my primary reading platform for years, and recently I’ve become a huge fan of audiobooks as well.

For my 40th birthday, my wife bought me a bookshelf to hold the physical books from my reading challenge, and I’ve really enjoyed filling it.

A few favorites already on the shelf include The Screwtape Letters and This Present Darkness.

I’d Love to Have You Along

Whether you’re a lifelong Christian, someone asking difficult questions, or even a skeptic who’s just curious what Christians actually believe, you’re welcome here.

I enjoy thoughtful conversations.

I enjoy discussing books.

Most of all, I enjoy talking about the person at the center of all of it.

Jesus Christ.

I hope you’ll subscribe, join the conversation, and come along for the journey.
