| A few months ago I read Atomic Habits for my 40th birthday reading challenge of reading 40 of the most influential books ever written. It was… fine. Honestly, I thought it was mostly common sense. But one of the principles struck me: Decide first what kind of person you want to be, then build habits that get you there.I thought about it and concluded: I want to be someone who really knows the Bible. So I started redeeming the time on my morning commute.Three days a week I drive into the office. For the past two months I’ve been using that 45 minute drive to memorize key passages from the Gospel of John, one chapter at a time. I’d record myself on voice notes, play it back, work it until it stuck. My intention was to just work on it during those three morning commutes per week. But then I’d find myself practicing on the way home, doing yard work, even in the shower. Very early in the process, something remarkable happened. I started using it. Naturally. In conversations with my family, with a coworker I’ve been witnessing to. I learned there is a massive difference between being able to paraphrase Scripture and actually having it locked in your heart chapter and verse.Today I did all 21 chapters and recorded the whole thing.
